Standard Treatment of Sciatica
The treatment for sciatica can be divided into three types: natural, medial and surgery. The treatment depends on every specific case, for example some kinds of treatment cannot be used if the symptoms are caused by pregnancy.
Before starting the treatment for sciatica it is important to understand what causes the pain. Some of the treatments are aimed at relieving pain and some at easing the pressure on the back.
The most usual medical treatments are: anti-inflammatory medications, acetaminophen, narcotics (in case of serious pain), physical therapy/stretching exercises, epidural steroid injects, non-surgical spinal decompression, massage therapy, chiropractic.
Generally the treatments can be divided into three types: physical therapy, prescription drugs and steroid injections.
As for physical therapy it includes exercises that help to correct your posture, strengthen the muscles supporting your back and improve your flexibility. Exercises are also often combined with other types of treatment in most serious cases. What is most important with this type of treatment is that it must be done on a daily basis, or it will have no effect.
Prescription drugs usually include anti-inflammatory medication along with a muscle relaxant, narcotics to ease the pain for a short period of time, tricyclic antidepressants and anticonvulsant drugs for chronic pain. Generally the doctors prescribe drugs that either enhance the production of endorphins or block pain messages to the brain. This type of treatment also has a number of limitations, for example some of the drugs are not prescribed to people with cardiac problems or during pregnancy.
The steroid treatment is used in the most serious cases. The doctor prescribes corticosteroid medication into the affected area (I bet you heard this often in House M.D.). Corticosteroids suppress inflammation around the irritated nerve and help to relive pain.

There are also natural treatments which can support or replace altogether the harsher, more invasive treatments of conventional medicine, such as the energy therapy eft, special diet to reduce inflammation, laughter therapy (surprisingly good at reducing pain and enjoyable too!) and aromatherapy massage
